Background

At Barry Turner & Son, we believe our work should go beyond bricks, wires and pipes — because sometimes, the smallest practical change can make the biggest emotional difference.

We were recently approached by the ACED Project, who shared the story of a brave young woman battling mental health challenges, particularly in moments of solitude. Her story reminded us that even infrastructure can be a matter of wellbeing.

The Challenge

This young woman confided in the ACED team that she regularly experienced intrusive thoughts of self-harm, especially when alone in the bath. Unfortunately, there had been times where these thoughts led to action — making the bathroom not just a place of routine, but a place of risk.

When asked what might make things feel safer, her answer was simple but powerful:

“A shower would help. I don’t feel the same way when I’m standing.”

That change in routine — from lying still in the bath to standing and showering — could break the mental loop and provide a small yet important shift in how her space felt.

Our Response

We didn’t hesitate. Barry Turner & Son arranged the supply and installation of a new water heater and modern shower unit — ensuring everything was safe, practical and in place as quickly as possible.

It wasn’t just a job. It was a gesture of support, dignity and safety. And for her, it was a daily reminder that she’s not alone.

The Outcome

This was more than plumbing — it was prevention.

By installing a shower, we helped transform a triggering space into one that encourages strength and safety. It’s a powerful example of how trades and mental health support can work hand in hand, offering real-world solutions to deeply human struggles.

Acknowledgement

We’re incredibly grateful to the ACED Project for trusting us with this task and for the important work they do. We’re proud to have played a small part in a much bigger journey — one that proves our work has the power to support lives, not just homes.
